A season-by-season guide
Eight years.
Hundreds of shoots. Every season Austin has to offer.
When to shoot in Austin: A guide from a photographer who has spent eight years learning this city.
Austin is not a one-size-fits-all city when it comes to photography. The light shifts. The landscape transforms. The heat is real. After eight years and hundreds of shoots, I know exactly when to be outside, when to head to the studio, and when to watch the forecast and make the call. This is that knowledge, season by season.

01 — Winter
December January February
Studio Season — By Design, Not Default.
Austin winter is brown, flat, and unpredictable. The landscape loses its lushness and the light can be harsh or flat depending on the day. That's why winter is intentionally a studio season in my practice. We build the beauty ourselves with controlled light, curated backdrops, and intentional styling. The results are consistent, polished, and timeless. Don't let the season limit you.

02 — Early Spring
March
The City Is Waking Up, But Slowly.
March is transitional. The green is starting to return, but it's inconsistent. This is the month for shooting with intention, leaning into architecture, cityscapes, and built environments rather than raw nature. The practiced eye sees what's there; the inexperienced eye sees what's missing. This is where experience becomes your biggest asset.

03 — Prime Spring
AprilMay
Prime Time. Blooming. Golden. Not Yet Hot.
These are the months everyone wants and for good reason. The wildflowers are out. The light is golden. The temperatures are genuinely comfortable. It's the sweet spot before the brutal Texas heat sets in, and the natural beauty of Austin is at a peak. These months book fast. There's a reason for that. If you're considering a shoot, this is when to lock it in.

04 — Early Summer
June
Stunning or Sweltering — Sometimes Both.
June sits right on the edge. Some days are magic, the lushness of spring still lingers and the light is extraordinary. Other days, the heat is already relentless. The key to June is vigilance. I watch the forecast closely and we make the call together. With the right timing, June can produce some of the most stunning work of the year.

05 — Deep Summer
JulyAugust
Studio Season. Austin Heat Is Relentless.
The heat doesn't just feel uncomfortable, it shows up in your photos. Sweat, squinting, the harsh flat light of a scorching afternoon. These months are studio season for a reason. The exceptions? Sunrise shoots, when the air is still cool and the light is extraordinary. And water getting in it, shooting near it. These are the workarounds that still make magic happen in July and August.

06 — Fall
September October November
The Best Light of the Year. Austin at Its Most Beautiful.
This is it. The moment Austin becomes undeniably, effortlessly beautiful. The brutal heat breaks. The light goes warm and golden in a way that only autumn can deliver. The greens deepen. The air is actually comfortable. September through November is when I produce some of my most breathtaking work, and when clients get the outdoor experience they've been dreaming of. Perfect weather. Warm tones. Book this season first.
